I feel the need to declare that I love the Bible.
This may seem a strange thing to say, perhaps obvious to some, considering I work full time for a church. But I would say that there are many, many people who work at churches who do not love the Bible whatsoever – who spend far more time studying to teach rather than to learn and submit to God themselves, and who speak confidently about the interpretation of the Bible without applying it to their lives. I was studying for a teaching in Romans 5, and created a little acronym I want to share with you. It is terribly cheesy, so please forgive me. However, if you have ever studied for a big test you know that the sillier the saying is, the easier it is to remember. So at the risk of being openly mocked for this cheesy saying, I continue.

I hope today to encourage those of you who are in difficult times right now. Truly, most people can say that in some way life is “hard”, whether that be their own health, the health of a loved one, financial stresses, relationship rifts, sexual immorality they are suffering from either as the agent or the victim, and the list goes on. If you would be one of the few to say you have not suffered a great deal yet in this life, then I say to you that your time is coming soon enough. Most people, if they are honest, have suffered or are currently suffering. Providence Bible Church is a relatively small church by size, yet many of our families have either recently suffered or are in the middle of great difficulty in one form or another. What does it mean to be a man? Are there universally adequate terms to describe what it means to be a man? This has been on my mind for the past few weeks as I’ve been reading through a book called “No More Christian Nice Guy” by Paul Coughlin. While it is an interesting read it seems to pigeon hole masculinity into a certain type of guy (though I’m only 4 chapters in). Many books by Christians about Christian men seem to call men to be outdoors lovers who seek adventure in everything they do, or who have rough edges and try to sprinkle a few “cuss words” around just to shake things up a bit. But I’m not entirely convinced this is what it means to be a Christian man. Read the rest of this entry »
“Can you stop your ipod for two seconds?”
“What?”
Sigh… “Can you please stop your ipod so I can talk to you.” Read the rest of this entry »
One of my best friends for the past 12 years, Taylor Lawrence, could have died on Tuesday afternoon. He was riding his new motorcycle on HWY 193 away from Auburn/Newcastle area and fell off a 45 foot cliff. All things considered most people would say he “should” have died because of it. Yet by the grace of God he is alive, and not only that but the biggest physical wounds are only a dislocated shoulder, soreness, and a great deal of scratches due to the blackberry bush he slid into. It was a normal Tuesday afternoon until Read the rest of this entry »

My husband and I enjoy going out to breakfast on Friday mornings. As we ate our pancakes at a local breakfast diner a couple weeks ago, I couldn’t help but notice the older retired couple next to me. They were talking about how the pancakes had too much salt in them. We ended up striking up a conversation and enjoying their company for the rest of our meal. After that conversation, I got to thinking about salt. Read the rest of this entry »
